The newly revised Health and Physical Education curriculum was released by the Ontario government on Monday, February 23, with plans for implementation to begin in September of this year. The curriculum covers a wide array of health and physical education concepts; the material on healthy living, specifically the area of human sexuality, has been raising some concern.
I want to assure you that I fully support parents as the primary educators of their children. I, along with all Bishops in Ontario, will continue to ensure that Catholic teachings on human life, sexuality, marriage and family will be taught through the Fully Alive program as they have been for 30 years. I am pleased that the Ministry of Education is providing funding which will allow Catholic resources to be created to provide support for teachers as they deliver this new curriculum using materials appropriate for use in our Catholic schools.
I agree fully with the statement made by Cardinal Thomas Collins on behalf of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario. You may wish to read Cardinal Collins statement, or our ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ provided below.
