After a loved one dies, please contact the parish office. The Priest or Pastoral Minister will take some time to pray with you and help you plan the funeral ceremonies. Normally, Catholics celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial at the Parish Church. For pastoral reasons a Funeral liturgy may also be celebrated at a Funeral Home or other Chapel.
Often, family members like to choose Scripture readings or music for the celebration. The Priest or Pastoral Minister will help you to make selections that are appropriate. You may also choose friends or family members to read or participate in the Liturgy.
The Mass of Christian Burial may be celebrated with Cremated Remains present. It is not Catholic custom to scatter cremated remains or keep them in a private residence. Out of respect for the deceased, Cremated Remains are buried or interred in a Mausoleum. (see Diocesan Policy for Disposition of Cremated Remains)
In the Diocese of Hamilton, a eulogy is not permitted during the Funeral Mass. It may take place during the vigil prayers at the funeral home, at the graveside or at the reception.
