Baptism

Baptism is the first sacrament of initiation and the prerequisite for all other sacraments. Through baptism, people are forgiven of all their sins, made children of God, and made members of His Church.

Baptism for Children under 7 years of age

To book a baptism in the parish, one parent must be a baptized Catholic, must be a registered member of our parish and live in the Hamilton Catholic Diocese.

If you are not a registered member of St. Michael’s Parish, please go to the bottom of the main page on the website: www.StMichael-Oakville.org and fill out a Parish Registration Form.

  • Please fill out the Baptism Registration Form at least 8 weeks in advance of your requested Baptism date. Choose a date from the Baptism Schedule for 2024 and mark it on your form. Then email it back and Father will look over the form, and then we will get back to you a week later to confirm.

  • A child to be baptized needs at least one Godparent.  Godparents must be Baptized Catholic and have received the Sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation.  They ought to be practicing Catholics who are living a good moral life.   A non-Catholic cannot be a godparent but may act as a Christian witness alongside a Catholic Godparent if they are a Baptized Christian. If a Godparent cannot attend the Baptism, another Catholic could stand “in proxy” for them. The name of that person needs to be on the registration form beside the Godparent who cannot attend and write “in proxy” beside the name.

  • Parents and Godparents must attend a Baptism Preparation Class for each child before their scheduled baptism. The parish office will give you a date for the preparation class when they confirm your baptism date.  The class is held at St. Michael’s Church once a month in the crying room and is approximately 1 hour long.

  • Baptisms and Baptism preparations are held in both Spanish & English.

  • Please email or call the parish office with any questions: sacramentsstmichael@bellnet.ca – 905-844- 7971.

Baptism for Children over 7 years of Age

Children who are in Grade 3 or older must first receive some instruction before baptism.   The length and nature of the instruction depend upon the specific needs of each child.  After the preparation,  the children will receive all three sacraments of initiation – Baptism, Confirmation, and First Holy Communion – at a Sunday Mass.   Please contact Father Jerzy to discuss your situation.
